Medical Billing & Coder Specialist Remote | Youth Mental Health – Telehealth
TAMMIRA is a youth telehealth startup dedicated to expanding access to psychiatric and mental health care for youth. We are looking for a detail-oriented billing & coding specialist who can own the full claims lifecycle — from submission to resolution — in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment. If you are a self-starter who brings both precision and persistence to revenue cycle work, this role is for you. This is a 1099 independent contractor role. You must have a secure, HIPAA-compliant home office setup and your own reliable equipment. WHAT YOU WILL DO Claims & Billing
- Submit accurate insurance claims using CPT and ICD-10 codes and other fee schedules for psychiatric and behavioral health services for youth
- Track outstanding claims and follow up proactively on unpaid or pending items
- Process payments and reconcile accounts receivable
- Generate patient invoices and manage collections communications as needed
Denials & Appeals
- Investigate denied or underpaid claims and identify root causes
- Prepare and submit appeals with supporting documentation
- Navigate payer portals and make carrier calls to resolve issues
- Log all status updates, call notes, and resolution timelines in detail
Credentialing & Verification
- Handle prior authorizations for mental health services
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to service
- Support provider credentialing and re-credentialing with Medi-Cal and commercial payers
Compliance & Records
- Maintain HIPAA compliance across all documentation and communication
- Audit records for completeness and coding accuracy
- Stay current on payer policy changes and coding updates relevant to mental health
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Required
- 5+ years of medical billing experience, preferably in mental health or behavioral health
- Strong working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and Medi-Cal/Medicaid payer requirements
- Experience managing denials, appeals, and accounts receivable
- Proficiency with EHR/EMR billing systems (TherapyNotes experience is a plus)
- Excellent attention to detail and an over-documenting mindset — if it isn’t logged, it didn’t happen
- Professional clear written and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and take full ownership of assigned tasks
Preferred
- Certification in medical billing or coding (CPC, CCS, CPB, CMRS, or equivalent)
- Experience with psychiatric or youth behavioral health practices
- Familiarity with prior authorization processes specific to mental health services
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, finance, or related field
