Key Focus Areas Within Our Data Platform Teams

Database Access Platform

The Database Access Platform team at arenaflex builds and operates a flexible query gateway that facilitates data abstractions operating at sub-millisecond latencies. This enables arenaflex microservices to efficiently store, consume, and manage their data. This team carries significant responsibility for ensuring that our microservices can meet their constantly evolving data demands. The team is passionate about distributed data infrastructure technology, actively contributes to the open-source community, and believes in operating what we own end-to-end. As a small team responsible for business-critical systems, we foster a culture of constructive feedback and engineering excellence.

Data Platform Infrastructure

The Data Platform Infrastructure team at arenaflex serves as a foundation for all of our internal data platforms. Our shared infrastructure and tooling empower arenaflex to rapidly deliver cutting-edge data and analytics systems to the rest of the organization without building custom foundations for each new system. To accomplish this, we create high-impact framework, control plane, and orchestration systems that are finely tuned for the demands of operating data systems at massive scale. Many of our tools and systems are written in Python, making this an exceptional team for engineers who enjoy working across multiple programming languages and paradigms.

Data Movement and Processing

This team offers an abstracted, self-service, paved-road product that empowers varied user personas across arenaflex to meet their low-latency data movement and processing needs. The team enables abstraction over complex streaming systems such as Kafka and Flink, provides a template-driven processing experience, and invests heavily in operational automation, reliability, and tools to ensure predictable data quality across the organization.

Big Data Compute

The Big Data Compute team at arenaflex is responsible for providing the cloud-native platform that powers distributed data processing. This team is essential to batch data processing within our Data Platform. It delivers robust support for Spark, enables ETL operations that feed our petabytes-scale data warehouse, and provides access to data through Spark and Voila/TrinoDB. The team also delivers sub-second latency for specific classes of queries using Druid. We are actively searching for exceptional talent with experience in Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and distributed database systems in general. Engineers on this team tackle fascinating and challenging problems related to working with data at massive scale, build features and performance improvements, and collaborate closely with open-source communities to shape projects and contribute back.

Big Data Orchestration

The Big Data Orchestration team at arenaflex provides the platform for designing, scheduling, and executing large data jobs and workflows in a fully self-service manner. These platforms encompass essential services that run all ETL and machine learning jobs on Big Data Systems at arenaflex. These fully distributed systems are continuously evolving to meet arenaflex's scale requirements with cutting-edge technology. We are moving toward event-driven and intelligent orchestration that requires minimal user input and intervention, representing the next frontier of data engineering automation.

What You Will Do – Core Responsibilities

• Architect and build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure that powers arenaflex's global data platform.
• Address real business needs at massive scale by applying your strong programming and analytical problem-solving skills.
• Drive cross-functional initiatives and collaborate effectively with engineers, product managers, and Technical Program Managers across multiple teams.
• Communicate your experiences, insights, and innovations to the open-source community and contribute meaningfully to arenaflex's open-source software initiatives.
• Design, develop, and optimize RESTful web services that handle billions of requests with low latency and high reliability.
• Build and operate fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable systems capable of handling petabytes of data.
• Debug complex multi-threading and concurrency issues, applying deep understanding of concurrent programming patterns.
• Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical mentoring to elevate the engineering quality of the entire team.
• Contribute to technical strategy discussions and help shape the long-term vision of arenaflex's data infrastructure.
• Document architectural decisions, system designs, and operational procedures to support knowledge sharing across the organization.

What We Are Looking For – Essential Qualifications

• Experience: A minimum of 2+ years of professional experience building large-scale distributed systems, platforms, or applications in a production environment.
• Web Services Expertise: Strong proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services, including understanding of HTTP semantics, API design principles, and service-oriented architectures.
• Distributed Systems Knowledge: Demonstrated experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems that handle high throughput and massive data volumes.
• Programming Languages: Strong proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming languages, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and performant code.
• Concurrency: Comfort and confidence in tackling multi-threading challenges, including understanding of thread safety, locking mechanisms, and concurrent data structures.
• Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

• Hands-on experience with big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Apache Kafka, Trino/Presto, Apache Iceberg, or Apache Druid.
• Deep understanding of database internals, query optimization, and storage engines.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures and deployment on major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Contributions to open-source projects, demonstrating engagement with the broader engineering community.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• A collaborative mindset with proven ability to work effectively across team boundaries.
